Environment Canada has issued special weather statements for Waterloo region, as well as Guelph-Wellington and its surrounding areas Friday.

The statement said both areas could see significant rainfall with a risk of thunderstorms over the weekend.

The agency said total rainfall amounts between 20 to 40 mm is expected, with some areas possibly getting more than 40 mm.

The rainfall is expected Saturday evening through Sunday night.
